Barcelona are interested in signing Valencia left-back Jose Gaya, as they look to solve their problems in defence. Jordi Alba is the undoubted started at left-back but new signing Junior Firpo has failed to impress.

The difference in class between Barcelona’s 1st and 2nd choice left-back is clear. Barcelona want to solve this problem and Jose Gaya is deemed the perfect fit for the Blaugrana.

Junior Firpo has failed to impress at Barcelona

Junior Firpo hasn’t lived up to expectations

According to Sport, Barcelona have made contact with Valencia over their left-back, Jose Gaya. The report claims that Valencia told the Catalan side that Gaya would be available for €15 million plus add-ons.

The 25 year old has featured heavily for Valencia in the recent seasons and has made a name for himself. Luis Enrique has rewarded him rightly with a spot in the Spanish national team.

The €15 million price tag for the 25 year old defender is very reasonable but Barcelona have their own financial problems. The club believes a move for the player is possible, but that would require them to sell Junior Firpo.

Firpo is one of the players likely on his way out come the end of the season. He’d likely have been moved during the winter transfer window if not for personal reasons and it would leave the team without a back-up.

Alba at 32 is still the first choice at Barcelona, but is nearing the twilight of his career. Barcelona however can face stiff competition from other clubs for Gaya if the fee reported is as low as €15 million.
