Barcelona is set to face Valencia in their first match of La Liga 2024–25 tomorrow at the Mestalla. They have finally registered their Spanish defender, Inigo Martinez, ahead of the game. Martinez was one of the players who was not registered by FC Barcelona until now, along with players like Pau Victor, Dani Olmo, and Vitor Roque.
However, it is now officially announced that the Blaugrana have managed to register Martinez ahead of their Mestalla trip.
Manager Hansi Flick himself requested the board to register Martinez in urgent basis as the Uruguayan defender, Ronald Araujo, is out with an injury while the likes of Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia have not been part of the pre-season under Flick due to their participation in the Paris Olympics.
Inigo Martinez signed a 2-year contract with Barcelona in the summer of 2023
Barcelona signed Martinez for free in the summer of 2023 and locked him in a 2-year contract. They, however, registered him for just one season. Hence, there were some talks regarding his future, as it was not certain whether he would continue this season or not.
Barcelona used the opportunity of Araujo’s injury and hence did not register him in the summer. Instead, they used that slot to register Martinez. Barca did the same thing in January 2024 when they registered new signing Vitor Roque in Gavi’s slot after the latter was sidelined with an ACL injury.
However, it has still not been revealed what jersey number Martinez will wear. Clement Lenglet will sport jersey number 12 and has the opportunity to even feature against Valencia in the opening game at Mestalla. Martinez had won 63 aerial duels and 38 tackles in the 2023–24 season.
Reports were floating around that Martinez would be sold this season to generate revenue and free up the wage bill. However, Araujo’s injury in the Copa America 2024 changed the scenario.
