Carlos Alcaraz has inched closer to another Barcelona Open title. He lifted the title in 2022 and 2023 but skipped the tournament last year due to an injury. On Saturday (April 19), the Spaniard moved past Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4 to book himself a spot in the final.
The final will see a battle between the two 21-year-olds as Alcaraz will be squaring off against Holger Rune, who knocked out Karen Khachanov with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. Rune entered the Barcelona Open following a mid-match retirement in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Holger Rune: Match Preview
Carlos Alcaraz is bidding to win his third title of the season. Prior to Barcelona, Alcaraz, who was facing a lot of criticism for his trophy-less runs since winning this season’s Rotterdam Open, made an emphatic start on the European clay swing at the Monte Carlo Masters.
He met an injured Lorenzo Musetti and dropped the first set before changing the momentum completely in his favor. It was his ninth clay-court trophy and his first in The Principality.
The four-time Grand Slam champion entered the clay swing without winning a title in the two Sunshine Double tournaments for the first time since 2021. He fell in the semifinal to eventual winner Jack Draper at Indian Wells and succumbed to a three-set defeat to veteran David Goffin in his opening-round match in Miami.
En route to the final, Alcaraz eliminated Ethan Quinn, Laslo Djere, Alex de Minaur, and Arthur Fils. Rune, on the other hand, defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Sebastian Baez, last year’s runner-up Casper Ruud, and Karen Khachanov.
Rune, the winner of four ATP titles, is still searching for his first of the season. So far in the season, he has produced his best performance at Indian Wells, where he progressed to the final.
Prior to the two Masters 1000 tournaments in the United States, Rune was in South America for the Golden Swing but had disappointing campaigns. He was knocked out in the first round of the Argentina Open following which food poisoning ended his run at the Mexican Open.
Win or no win in the final, Rune, who is currently ranked 13, will move four places up to occupy the ninth position in the rankings table on Monday. Alcaraz, however, could lose the No.2 ranking if Rune defeats him and Alexander Zverev wins the BMW Open. Zverev then will lead Alcaraz by only five points.

Alcaraz will be the heavy favorite to win the final. His stats on the surface only speak for themselves that he is one of the best clay-court players at present. The Murcia native, the winner of last year’s French Open, also reached the Paris Olympic final that was held at Roland Garros last year but lost the gold medal to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Rune, on the other hand, is the winner of two clay-court titles. He won the BMW Open in 2022 and defended his title the following season.
The Dane has met Alcaraz thrice on the ATP Tour but the upcoming final will be their first on clay. Alcaraz leads 2-1 in their head-to-head meetings and also clinched the win the last time they met: in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Wimbledon.
