The qualifying rounds of the 2025 Barcelona Open are currently underway. And the main draw events will be held following the conclusion of the ongoing Monte Carlo Masters, where Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti will battle it out to claim the first Masters 1000 of the season on clay.

The Barcelona Open, on the other hand, is the first ATP 500 tournament of the season on the red dirt, and the matches are held on the outdoor hard courts of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona. The tournament in the Spanish city, founded in 1953, used to be a combined Men’s and Women’s tournament until 1980.

The first round will feature 32 participants, eight of whom are the seeded ones. They are: Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Holger Rune, Arthur Fils, and Musetti.

Alcaraz, the first seed, will enter the tournament as a two-time champion, while second seed Ruud is the defending champion, having won the title last year by beating Tsitsipas. The 21-year-old won the Barcelona Open for the first time in 2022 by beating Pablo Carreno Busta and defeated Tsitsipas the following year to defend his title.

Alcaraz, who has so far claimed the Rotterdam Open this season, is the most successful clay-court player on the ATP tour in recent years, having won eight titles, including the French Open he lifted last year by overcoming Alexander Zverev. The four-time Grand Slam champion didn’t play last year as an injury forced him to pull out of the Monte Carlo Masters as well as the Barcelona Open.

On April 12, the draw of the Barcelona Open was released. Alcaraz could meet De Minaur in the quarterfinals, and Tsitsipas, or Fils in the semifinals. And in the final, he could square off against Ruud or Rune and, once again, could schedule a match against Musetti.

Barcelona Open 2025 schedule

The main draw of the Barcelona Open will start on April 14. It’s a single-week tournament so the final will be held on Sunday (April 20).

The total prize pool of the Barcelona Open is $3,282,564. The winner will get $593,657, while the runner-up will pocket $316,621.

World No.1 Jannik Sinner is not playing as he is serving his three-month doping ban and will make his comeback at the Italian Open. Novak Djokovic, who has never won the tournament, is also not playing. Other notable absentees are World No.2 Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev.

Former player Rafael Nadal lifted the most titles in the tournament and has also won the most number of matches (66). The King of Clay took home 12 trophies between 2005 and 2021 but he won’t be playing the tournament as he called time on his career at the Davis Cup last year.

After the conclusion of the Barcelona Open, the tennis world will shift their attention to the second Masters 1000 event on clay- the Madrid Open. It is also the first combined Men’s and Women’s clay-court event of the same category and the third overall this season following Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Andrey Rublev and Iga Swiatek were the winners in last year’s Madrid Open.
