The National Football League entered its eleventh week on Thursday when the New England Patriots (9-2) defeated the New York Jets (2-7) at home. With eight more weeks, including the eleventh one, left in the league, the tournament intensity is far higher than ever before.

As the league heats up, the race for Most Valuable Player has also tightened. Drake Maye, who has led the Patriots to their first eight-week winning streak since Tom Brady, is the frontrunner in this race. Maye leads the league with 2,836 passing yards and is tied for second-most touchdowns with Jared Goff. He also has the highest completion rate among quarterbacks with more than ten starts this season.

However, Maye has been equally matched by a resurgent Daniel Jones, leading the Indianapolis Colts with an 8-2 record heading into the 11th week. Bart Scott, former Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets linebacker and sports analyst on ESPN, felt that with the given context, Maye should not outrightly be called the frontrunner in this race.

Bart Scott, a staunch Patriots rival, admitted that there are a few others like Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, and Matthew Stafford who are all playing at a high level. He pointed out the fact that a highly regarded coordinator has been responsible for designing strong plays for him.

He also added that the Patriots have had a light schedule so far, and they have beaten out the teams with a combined record of 37-66. Scott said on Friday’s Get Up episode:

I saw a quarterback that has a good coordinator that has designed good plays for him, but I also see a team that has beaten teams with a combined record of 37-66. Let’s keep it in perspective…MVP? I think that’s disrespectful to Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold and Matthew Stafford.

However, Scott did give Maye some praise. Though the praise was subtle, Maye highlighted his smart decision-making, strong deep-ball accuracy, and ability to create explosive plays.

The New England Patriots can finish conference first, but playoff success for Drake Maye is skeptical

The New England Patriots are leading the conference with a 9-2 record after their TNF win over the New York Jets. It won’t be easy with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos breathing down their necks.

In comparison with the Colts and Broncos, the Patriots have a lighter schedule. Apart from the Bills, the Patriots’ remaining games are all against opponents with a losing record. It might be slightly misleading, as in they have a Baltimore Ravens matchup, who have a losing record but are on the rise.

On a recent episode of The Arena: Gridiron, the analyst Skip Bayless acknowledged that the New England Patriots have built a roster capable of making a deep postseason run. However, he questioned whether young quarterback Drake Maye has the experience needed to handle playoff pressure. Bayless said:

I am just not sold on this still young quarterback being battle-tested enough to beat Mahomes, Josh Allen, or even Danny Dimes in a playoff game.

Bayless praised the franchise for surrounding Maye with strong support, citing Mike Vrabel‘s leadership, Stefon Diggs as a top offensive weapon, and Christian Gonzalez anchoring an elite secondary. He highlighted the Patriots’ run defense, currently the best in the league, as another major strength.

Still, Bayless’ skepticism centered on Maye’s limited exposure to high-stakes matchups. Although he acknowledged Maye’s impressive poise during the regular season, he questioned whether those qualities would hold up in the postseason.

Bayless also downplayed New England’s recent win over Tampa Bay, noting that the Buccaneers were missing key offensive players. Maye would be concerned about the playoff chances, but he’s remained humble on the MVP chants and personal accolades.
