The USA national team suffered an embarrassing 111-113 defeat to the German national team. Germany’s outstanding three-point shooting propels them to the FIBA World Cup Finals. Germany saw three of their five starters score 20-plus points, including clutch baskets from Andreas Obst and Dennis Schröder. Anthony Edwards, Team USA’s leading scorer was poor from three-point range all game but mustered a clutch three to bring USA within three points in the fourth quarter.

Austin Reaves was the second leading scorer for Team USA scoring a late three-pointer, but missed the three to tie the game in the final seconds. Germany took a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter behind Andreas Obst’s remarkable shooting.

NBA center Daniel Theis was also key to the success of Germany, scoring 21 points and seven rebounds. NBA brothers Franz and Moritz Wagner also came up huge for Germany scoring 22 points and 10 points respectively.

The big hero for Germany was Andreas Obst who led all scorers with 24 points and also dished out six assists. Obst also made a highlight play, dropping Tyrese Haliburton and hitting a dagger three with 1:14 left on the clock. Schröder proceeded to knock another clutch mid-range jumper to put Germany up by six.

Austin Reaves, who has been sensational for Team USA dropped 21 points in the stunning upset. Team USA starter Brandon Ingram was nowhere to be seen on the court after his abysmal performance in the World Cup. Jaren Jackson Jr., the defensive player of the year was also held back by Germany’s centers and was able to put up a measly eight points and three rebounds.

Anthony Edwards made a devastating late turnover allowing Germany to outlast the USA. 2022-2023 All-star Tyrese Haliburton was also missing in action with only 7 points. Germany made 13 of 30 three-point field goals compared to the USA’s 12 of 25. Offensive rebounding was also a key part of Germany’s success, outrebounding the USA 12 to 7.

The USA have not won the FIBA World Cup since 2014 when multiple superstars like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, DeMar DeRozan and Kyrie Irving suited up for Team USA. They also suffered a major loss in 2019 finishing in seventh place. Team USA will face Canada, who also suffered an embarrassing defeat to Serbia. The bronze medal game will take place before the finals on Sunday, 10 September 2023.
