Caitlin Clark has already cemented herself as one of the best female college basketball players in NCAA history. Her record-breaking performance came yesterday when she surpassed Kelsey Plum‘s women’s all-time scoring record. Receiving plaudits from superstar athletes, celebrities and even her arch-rival was well deserved. With four more regular season games to go, Clark could cement herself as the best college basketball player ever.

Caitlin Clark’s record haul of points stands at 3569. The all-time scoring record for points in the men’s category is 3667, held by NBA Hall of Famer Pete Maravich. Maravich’s record, set in 1970, holds to this day. Clark is 98 points shy of tying Maravich’s record. With Clark’s points per game average, it seems she will break the record before the end of the regular season. Being the all-time leading scorer irrespective of gender should be good enough for the greatest-ever label.

Clark will most likely break the scoring record. But she wants to cement her status as the best-ever with a championship win. Last year, the 22-year-old and the Iowa Hawkeyes fell short at the last hurdle to Angel Reese and the LSU Tigers. It is not a shot at her, who single-handedly led the Hawkeyes to the NCAA Tournament Finals.

But Clark knows that a trophy will add to her already illustrious collegiate career. The WNBA is knocking on her door with an interest in taking her skills to the professional stage. But she still has the option of returning for one more year in case she cannot get her hands on that trophy this year.

Is Caitlin Clark going to be the greatest ever with only points to show?

Clark’s record of points should not be the only reference when considering the all-time great label. She is currently fifth all-time in assists with 1018. Getting the all-time record for assists seems a tough task this season as she would need 150 assists to get there.

With her average of 8.5 assists per game, she would need 15-16 games to break the assist record. If she does return next year, she could easily break the assists record. Add to that, Clark is the de facto leader of the Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball team. So being the leader, primary scorer, and passing to teammates has already set her aside as the best.

If at all there is any doubt, a scorer ranked No.1 all-time in points and also helping teammates along the way should cement her status as the best to ever do it.
