“I need a congressional investigation” – LeBron James, Angel Reese and fans go nuts over CONTROVERSIAL call helping Caitlin Clark’s team beat UCONN in Final Four
Caitlin Clark makes it to her second consecutive NCAA Championship game.
Controversial call in final seconds hands Caitlin Clark and Iowa victory over UConn, LeBron James, Angel Reese and basketball fans call out the officiating
Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes are back into the NCAA Championship game for the second consecutive time. And they achieved that by narrowly beating the UConn Huskies in a tightly fought Final Four matchup. However, many of the basketball fraternity called out a controversial call in the final moments that pushed the game into Iowa’s favor.
The UConn Huskies’ harrowing defense ensured that the Iowa Hawkeyes turned the ball over with 9 seconds left on the clock. Then after receiving the inbounds pass, Huskies point guard Nika Muhl directed her teammates to set screens. On the ensuing setting, Aaliyah Edwards initially stopped Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke from going to Paige Bueckers.
On the second screen, as Edwards tried to stop Iowa’s Gabbie Marshall from going after Bueckers, Marshall bumped into her. The resultant contact led the referee to call an offensive foul on Edwards.
That controversial call effectively handed the game to Iowa, as there were only 3.9 seconds left on the clock and they received possession. The problem with the call is that Edwards set the screen properly and did not lean in.
UConn executed a brilliant defensive gameplan to limit Caitlin Clark throughout the game. She ended up scoring only 21 points after being harrowed constantly by Nika Muhle’s incredible full court press. Clark had to thank her teammates for helping bail out the game when UConn also did not shoot well from the field.
LeBron James, Angel Reese and fans not happy with controversial call helping Caitlin Clark and Iowa
The call certainly helped Caitlin Clark and her Iowa Hawkeyes get over their bad shooting night. However, it seems no one is happy that the outcome of the game was decided by the referees instead of the players. LeBron James, Angel Reese, and others called out the officiating. They all were sure that the call was not valid, as it was evidently not an offensive foul.
As soon as the incident happened, they jumped onto social media to voice their opinions. With women’s basketball at its pinnacle, and a controversial call to decide, the outcome of a game could not be digested. Check out some of those reactions below;
It’s not like it was clear that Paige Bueckers could have made the last-second shot and won the game for UConn. However, turning the game around with a foul call was also not the way to close out an epic game.
