Liz Cambage once again finds herself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. The star of the Los Angeles Sparks had previously faced accusations of directing racial slurs at players from the Nigerian Women’s basketball team during a scrimmage before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. In response to the allegations made by the Nigerian players, Cambage withdrew from the Olympic squad, citing mental and physical unfitness.
Recently, a video of the scrimmage went viral on Twitter, clearly showing Liz displaying excessive physicality against the Nigerian team during an unofficial game and taunting them after committing fouls that would be considered flagrant in an official game. The Nigerian players appeared displeased with her behavior, and one of them confronted her on the bench, delivering a punch.
Subsequent to the video’s release, Liz Cambage issued a statement, expressing dissatisfaction with her treatment by the Australian Opals during the Covid-19 “Bubble.” She mentioned discussions about leaving the team and conveyed interest in joining the Nigerian national team to represent Nigeria. She attributed a concussion to a punch from a Nigerian player while denying any involvement in using racial slurs against Nigerian players.
“Before the scrimmage, I had expressed concerns to Opals staff about the unacceptable playing conditions within the COVID “Bubble” they were imposing. To set the record straight, I never stated that I had officially joined the Nigerian national team. Instead, I expressed my interest in joining the team and representing Nigeria.” Said Liz in her statement.
She also said that the punch that she took from a Nigerian player caused her to have a concussion. She also clarified that the claims of her using racial slurs towards Nigerian players are completely false.”The circulating video portrays a highly physical game with no officiating, resulting in me being attacked and sustaining a concussion. Contrary to false claims, I did not use racial slurs or refer to anyone as a monkey, which is evident from the footage.” Liz said.
