Angel Reese, Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Caitlin Clark

The NCAA March Madness matchup between Iowa and LSU broke the viewership ratings for a women’s basketball match. Such was the impact that fans around the world have been lauding what Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have brought to the sport. However, in a bizarre claim, analyst Colin Cowherd suggested that the political chaos brought by Presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump helped to set that record.

Speaking on his podcast The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the famed analyst was talking about how the game broke viewership records. But he had an interesting theory to explain the ratings.

When there's chaos and uncertainty in the country, people seek comfort. So historically when we were at war, people like comfort food. And right now, we are going into a highly turbulent political season, Biden and Trump. There's a lot of uncertainty. March Madness is comfort food.

Cowherd added that the talent level may not be high enough, but the current situation makes everyone want to watch or do something that makes them feel good. That is where March Madness comes in. He dismissed that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese had nothing to do with the ratings. Rather it was the political turmoil created by Donald Trump and Joe Biden that has people confused and unsure of what the future holds. Had the situation been normal, he doubted if the same numbers were possible.

Expanding his logic, he added that everyone has March Madness brackets. They are cheering on even though there is hardly any NBA-level talent on the men’s side. Despite that, the men’s games were getting extremely high viewership ratings.

Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese led to record viewership ratings at March Madness

No one can argue that the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese was the prime reason for fans to tune into their Elite Eight match. A record 12.3 million people watched the game, setting a new record for women’s basketball viewership.

After last year’s NCAA Finals, the stage was set with Clark and Reese at the forefront of the NCAA. Their fan following also grew enormously after their battle in 2023. All these factors led to this record viewership. Clark’s 2nd and 3rd games broke viewership records too. It does help in a certain way that she set the all-time scoring record in NCAA history.

The game was an all-out battle until Clark pulled the lead away from LSU’s reach. Now it remains to be seen how many more viewership records will be broken as the Final Four and Championship matches are around the corner. But it is certainly not due to Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
