WATCH: 7’1” Shaquille O’Neal gets towered by NCAA superstar Zach Edey at Final Four matchup
Zach Edey will take on Donovan Clingan in the NCAA Championship on Sunday.
Purdue big man Zach Edey towers over Shaquille O'Neal as they meet after NCAA Final Four
Shaquille O’Neal is the most popular big man in the basketball world. Standing tall at 7′ 1″, not many can match up to his combination of height and size.
Except if it is Purdue superstar Zach Edey. One of the few who is not only taller at 7’4″ but also has the size to go with that height. Edey towered over the Hall of Famer when they met after the NCAA Final Four tonight.
Zach Edey led his Purdue Boilermakers to a win against NC State in tonight’s NCAA Final Four. After the usual on-court interviews, Edey was making his way to the locker room when he noticed the 4-time champion standing along with fans.
The 21-year-old instantly went to greet O’Neal and exchanged pleasantries. Fans and media standing alongside captured the exchange between the two. Showcasing one of the rare moments when someone else towered over Shaquille O’Neal.
Zach Edey has been on a tear in this year’s college basketball season. Using his size to his advantage, the Purdue big man has averaged big numbers. Those numbers are good enough to be considered for one of the lottery picks in the upcoming NBA Draft.
O’Neal, a major proponent of the big man game, taking the time out to meet a college player is commendable. If the Canadian can continue his dominance in the NCAA Championship game against Donovan Clingan and the UConn Huskies, the basketball world will be swooning.
The battle of the big men in the NCAA Championship should excite Shaquille O’Neal
The last big man who captured the imagination of the entire basketball community while dominating the NCAA Tournament was Anthony Davis. Since then, there has been a shortage of elite big men. Either they are not skilled enough or not good enough to compete on the biggest stage of college basketball. This year presents that opportunity with not one but two elite big men set to face off on Sunday.
Zach Edey and Donovan Clingan are poised to battle in the NCAA Championship. The Purdue big man is their leading superstar and is in elite form, good enough to take on Clingan. The UConn Huskies big man, on the other hand, is slightly shorter and smaller than Edey but has a superior interior presence to give the Boilermakers star a good, hard-fought battle.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see how these two face each other and bring justice to the big-man alliance Shaquille O’Neal leads. They could also rejuvenate the long-lost post-game in the NBA next season onwards.
