Adama Sanogo had a message for anyone who doubted him and his UConn teammates: “You see now!”
The junior center from Mali delivered a passionate postgame interview after he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, following UConn’s 76-59 win over San Diego State in the NCAA championship game on Monday night. Sanogo was a force inside for the Huskies, averaging 19.7 points and 10 rebounds per game in the tournament. He scored 17 points and grabbed 10 boards in the title game, helping UConn win its fifth national championship in program history.
But Sanogo was not satisfied with just showing his skills on the court. He also wanted to make a statement to his critics and naysayers, who had questioned UConn’s chances of making a deep run in the Big Dance.
“You see now! You see now! They said we couldn’t do it. They said we were too small, too young, too inexperienced. ell, you see now! We are the champions! We are UConn!,” Sanogo exclaimed on the interview.
Sanogo’s words echoed the sentiments of his coach Dan Hurley, who praised his team for overcoming adversity and proving doubters wrong. Hurley said he was proud of how his players represented the program and the state of Connecticut. Sanogo also had a message for his family and friends back home in Mali, where he started playing basketball at age 12. He said he hoped his success would inspire other kids from his country to pursue their dreams.

The Huskies also showed their grit and determination, as they faced several obstacles throughout the tournament. They had to cope with Hawkins’ illness, which sidelined him for the Elite Eight game against Michigan State. They had to overcome early foul trouble for Jackson and Sanogo in the Final Four game against Miami. And they had to battle a formidable foe in San Diego State, which had won 32 straight games and boasted one of the best defenses in the nation.
Sanogo’s comments after winning the NCAA title went viral on social media, where fans expressed their admiration and awe for the UConn star. Here are some of the tweets that captured the mood:
The Huskies also received congratulations from former players, coaches and celebrities, who praised their performance and legacy. Among them were Ray Allen, Kemba Walker, Shabazz Napier, Jim Calhoun, Geno Auriemma and Barack Obama. The Huskies joined an elite group of UConn teams that have won national titles, including the ones in 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014.
The Huskies will return to Storrs on Tuesday, where they will be greeted by thousands of fans at Gampel Pavilion. They will also have a parade on Wednesday, where they will be honored by the governor, the mayor and other dignitaries. The Huskies will go down in history as one of the best teams ever to wear the blue and white. They are indeed a special team.
