The day Bayer Leverkusen and its fans have dreaded has finally arrived! After going a mind-blowing 51 games unbeaten, Xabi Alonso‘s men have succumbed to defeat in the Europa League final against Italian side Atalanta.
After being 90 minutes away from securing the Europa League unbeaten, Leverkusen are forced to pick themselves up from a shocking 3-0 defeat. Even though the final was won fair and square, Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini sent out a strong message as his side took the lead.
Touchline cameras captured the Atalanta boss shushing Alonso. One must understand that the game hadn’t been won and that Leverkusen have built up a reputation for being the king of late goals and comebacks.
That being said, it proved not to be Leverkusen’s night, as a hat-trick from Atalanta No.11 Ademola Lookman shattered their dreams of securing an unbeaten treble.
The internet has reacted to the same, with many claiming that Gasperini’s gesture easily makes it into the ‘coldest’ moments of the season.
Ademola Lookman scores first-ever Europa League final hat-trick since 1975 to shatter Leverkusen hearts
90 minutes stood between Bayer Leverkusen and their pursuit of the second trophy in securing an unbeaten treble. However, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman had other plans as he spoiled Leverkusen’s party. The Serie A side broke the Leverkusen defense on multiple occasions, with Lookman firing home on three instances.
His first goal came from a well worked team goal, when Davide Zappacosta sent in an inviting cut-back into the opposition’s penalty area. Lookman pounced on the opportunity and fired his shot into the roof of the net.
His second goal was truly a sight to behold. After picking up the ball a few yards out from Leverkusen’s penalty area, the No.11 nutmegged his marker before sidestepping another.
Despite being far off from goal, the Nigerian unleashed a powerful shot that found its way into the far right of the post. It was 2-0 till the 75th minute, when Lookman pounced on a late counter-attack. His left-footed strike found its way into the top-right corner to seal the deal for the Serie A side.
