Bayern Munich is no stranger to massive upsets in the Champions League. From FC Barcelona to Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, several top clubs in Europe have faced their wrath in previous seasons. However, it was Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb on the receiving end as the Germans put nine goals past them in their opening game of the league phase.
There was no stopping last season’s Golden Boot winner, Harry Kane, as he picked up right where he left off in the competition. Kane tucked away his penalty before Raphael Guerreiro scored one of the best goals of matchday 1. Michael Olise also scored on his UCL debut for the German giants before Kane went on to complete his hat-trick and then score another. Olise also became the first player since Thierry Henry to claim multiple goal contributions on his European debut.
Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka made them reach 9, as Bayern topped the table thanks to goal difference. The visitors did not go home empty handed, as two quick goals at the start of the second half gave the away side a sliver of hope.
Despite the result, fans are worried about Manuel Neuer‘s injury and the fact that his replacement, Sven Ulreich, conceded twice within four minutes of coming on.
Fans react as Vincent Kompany ‘proves his point’ with 9-2 win in Champions League
Not many had positive reviews as Bayern Munich appointed a ‘failed’ manager Vincent Kompany from Belgium, who recently saw his side get relegated from the Premier League. However, four months since the same, he finds his club at the top of the UCL table.
On social media, a fan commented that his case was the best example that a lot can happen in a year. Another added that Kompany upgraded himself while also helping his club upgrade by a significant margin. A fan also said that Kompany may have dropped one of the most motivational quotes ever following his press conference.
The mentality is to keep going till the end. If you fail, you fail and if you succeed, you succeed. Do not stop believing because of what other people say.Vincent Kompany told the press
Kompany stated that he is extremely happy for his players and congratulated them for the result. Bayern are now on a 9-game winning streak and are undefeated in their last 11 matches. They lead Bundesliga by two points and play their next game against Werder Bremen in three days’ time.
