It seems that the woes for Manchester United continue as the latest incident that may hit them hard. This time it involves their next prized target, Dutch defender, Matthijs de Ligt. The player has come under the radar and is being investigated by the German police for a potential hit-and-run allegation.

With hearsays getting stronger about the Bayern Munich defender, Matthijs de Ligt may be headed to Old Trafford in the ongoing summer window. As such, he was left out of the Bavarians’ touring squad to South Korea. Recently, BILD reported that the 24-year-old center-back may have rammed a parked car close to Sabener Strasse’s training ground while driving his Audi Q8 e-tron which approximately costs £63,000.

The German news outlet has also stated that after the collision, De Ligt simply drove away from the scene with the eyewitnesses informing the police of the unfortunate incident. BILD has subsequently stated that following the disaster, the German police seized De Ligt’s car and towed that away.

According to specialist lawyer, Marc Wederhake hailing from Munich, the former Ajax defender may also face a prison sentence as a maximum penalty for the scene reported, if found guilty. As per an interview with BILD, a lawyer from Stolzenau said, “A hit-and-run can only be committed intentionally. Now it must be proven that he perceived the accident acoustically, visually or tangibly.”

What can be in store for Manchester United?

Manchester United have had their fair share of troubles in the last season, with two of their best defenders injured for the majority of the time. Lisandro Martinez is all set to return to action from his earlier injury while Raphael Varane has bid adieu to Old Trafford. In the wake of Varane’s departure, Erik Ten Hag has already brought in Leny Yoro but much to his disappointment, the latter will only be available after three months as he copped a metatarsal injury in the pre-season.

De Light and Noussair Mazraoui are the prime targets for Manchester United after they have already landed Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. As such, Erik Ten Hag will be hopeful of building a young squad that will blend well with the presence of experienced campaigners in the squad. Manchester United will be starting their latest season with the FA Community Shield final against Manchester City while following that up with their League opener against Fulham.
