Bayern Munich cruised past Chelsea in a remarkable fashion winning 4-1 on the night. The Bavarians won 7-1 on the aggregate and set up a quarter final clash against Barcelona in Portugal next week. A comeback for Chelsea was never on the cards with injuries further derailing Lampard’s side.
It was Bayern’s talisman Lewandowski again, as he scored 2 and provided 2 in another spectacular performance.
Bayern came into the match with a 3-0 lead from the first leg. The first leg was played in February before the pandemic halted football all around the globe.
First half
As expected, it was Lewandowski and co. who took the lead on the night. Caballero brought down the Polish striker who made no mistake from the spot to get off the mark. The goal was a special one for Lewandowski as it was his 52nd in all competitions. The figure is the highest of any player in Europe’s ‘top 5’ leagues this season.
Bayern were all over Chelsea with Muller and Gnabry coming close to double the lead. The home side eventually got their second after Kovacic was caught in possession by Muller. The ball was threaded through to Perisic in the box who made no mistake to further deepen Chelsea woes.
Chelsea looked to have pulled one back immediately, but the goal was ruled put for offside. Hudson Odoi slotted past the keeper, but VAR ruled that there was an offside in the build-up. Bayern were in cruise control more and should have extended their lead. Chelsea however, managed to pull a goal back before half time through Tammy Abraham. Neuer’s mistake resulted in Abraham tapping in from close range. Lampard’s men were trailing 2-1 at half time and 5-1 on aggregate.
Second half
Tolisso put the game to bed in the 77th minute through a volleyed finish from close range. Lewandowski put the ball in from the left for his 2nd assist which was converted by an unmarked Tolisso to make it 6-1 on aggregate. It was the Polish sensation again who put the final nail in the coffin, this time by getting on the scoresheet.
Substitute Odriozola put an excellent cross into the box which was headed in by Lewandowski to make it 4-1 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate. It was a comfortable evening for the home side as they made light work of Chelsea.
Bayern Munich will head to Lisbon for the Final 8, brimming with confidence. They have a clash set up against Barcelona for a place in the semi finals of Champions League. Hansi Flick has done an excellent job to turn around Bayern, as they look to go all the way to win the coveted trophy.
Chelsea meanwhile end their season on a low, although they will be hoping for a better season next time around with new signings already in place.
