A number of football pundits and journalists slammed BBC for its coverage of Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, over his 105th minute penalty miss against Slovenia. Despite the miss, Portugal made it to the quarter-finals in the penalty shootout.
The former Manchester United star saw a penalty saved in Portugal’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Slovenia. However, he later found the back of the net during the penalty shootout. Overcome by emotion, the veteran was reduced to tears after failing to convert the spot-kick, which was brilliantly saved by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Ronaldo experienced a tough match, squandering multiple chances, which then saw him getting comforted and consoled by his teammates.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to criticize the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, the BBC during their match-analysis show labeled Ronaldo’s miss with a tag that read ‘Misstiano Penaldo’. This angered both fans and pundits, as it received backlash from supporters and former greats alike. Former Chelsea legend and English captain John Terry was left angered at such reporting by the channel, while labeling it as a ‘disgrace’ through an Instagram story.
In my 17 years of journalism and reporting, I’ve never seen such pathetic piece of broadcasting.

Where was this when Kane missed against France? Where was this when Messi missed against Chile?

Fans criticized the BBC’s reporting as ‘pathetic’ and pointed out the selective criticism of Ronaldo. One fan noted that Harry Kane‘s miss against France and Lionel Messi‘s miss against Chile were not similarly highlighted by the channel.
