BCCI Annual General Meeting: Sourav Ganguly set to face ‘ambush’ from unhappy members

Sourav Ganguly

The 89th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is scheduled to be held this week. According to The Times of India, members of the board have been extremely ‘unhappy’ with the way BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has been handling affairs while signing contracts and advertising brands such as ‘My11Circle’ who are direct rivals to the BCCI’s sponsor, ‘Dream11’.
According to the report, ‘ambush’ will be the keyword and Ganguly will be bombarded with question after question. Questions on the number of brands endorsed by Ganguly, the number of brands that are rivals to BCCI’s sponsors and the constitutionality of Ganguly’s actions will be scrutinized and discussed about at the all-important meeting.
‘It’s time to correct wrongdoings and ensure they aren’t repeated’

Members of the BCCI who chose to remain anonymous spoke to The Times of India about the AGM and the actions of Sourav Ganguly saying, “It was seen as a progressive step back then (Ganguly’s appointment). Everybody thought Ganguly coming on board as president would add value to the set-up, especially at a time when new aspirations had to be carved out. But it seems like all he’s interested in is signing brands. Why does he need the BCCI chair then?”
“The list just doesn’t end. And what’s worse is that these conflicts are blatant. He needs to explain what all this is about. Because if he wants to make money, he could’ve easily done it without occupying the BCCI chair. After all, he’s a former India captain,” he added.
“At the end of the day, the BCCI has been guilty of its own wrongdoings in the past, ones that have mostly stemmed out of arrogance and a sense of authority. For all the good things it has done in the past, all of it got overshadowed because of these handful of mistakes. It’s time to correct them and ensure they’re not repeated,” they further said.
It will be interesting to see how Ganguly tackles all these allegations when the AGM takes place.
