Yuvraj Singh

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been denied permission to represent Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. The all-rounder had earlier been named in the 30-man probables list for the tournament. The 39-year-old had earlier announced his retirement from international and Indian domestic cricket but on the request of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) secretary, Puneet Bali came out of retirement.

Despite being named in the probables, his participation was contingent on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) clearance as he had taken part in overseas leagues like the Global T20 Canada and the Abu Dhabi T10 League which is forbidden for non-retired players. The said permission has now been denied by the BCCI which means Yuvraj will not be a part of the Punjab squad.

Mandeep Singh to lead Punjab

Mandeep Singh

In Yuvraj Singh’s absence, Punjab will be captained by 29-year-old batsman Mandeep Singh who has made a name for himself as a reliable batsman in not only the domestic circuit but also in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he represents the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).

Yuvraj was the senior-most player in the 30-man probables list which was announced earlier and was hence, expected to be the captain, if named in the squad. Since the same hasn’t transpired, Mandeep Singh will be the skipper with Gurkeerat Singh Mann, also of IPL fame, as his deputy.
