The current Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah has been appointed as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He is set to succeed Nazmul Hasan from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in what is the top job of the body. The position is decided based on rotation from members of various Asian countries’ boards for a period of two years.

The norm usually is for the President of the BCCI to take over as the head of the council who is in this case, Sourav Ganguly. The former Indian cricketer is currently unwell which might be a reason as to why he has not taken over. The treasurer of the BCCI, Arun Singh Dhumal confirmed the news of the appointment by releasing a statement as confirmed by Cricbuzz.

Holding Asia Cup might be Shah’s biggest challenge

The official Twitter handle of the ACC announced the appointment as well writing, “The ACC is delighted to announce that Mr. Jay Shah, Hon. Secretary, BCCI has been appointed as its new President.”

Ehsan Mani, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reacted to the appointment and reportedly told Cricbuzz, “It is a smooth transition in the ACC. It is the turn of the BCCI and it is their prerogative to have whoever it wishes as the ACC president. My best wishes to him.”

A huge challenge that awaits Shah now is with regard to the Asia Cup which is set to take place in 2021. The 2020 edition was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now, a plethora of questions regarding the participation of Pakistan and India themselves over the political scenario.
