Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears were booed off the pitch on Monday night. Despite leading the Minnesota Vikings by 11 points at the end of the third quarter, the home team capitulated in the final moments.

Ben Johnson’s appointment as head coach brought renewed optimism to the Bears camp. The team was looking to put the 5-12 season behind them and start afresh.

For the first game of his rookie coaching career, Johnson faced off against the Vikings. The Bears started the game at a brisk pace, with second-year quarterback Caleb Williams completing 10 straight passes and a touchdown in the first quarter.

Fans inside Soldier Field expected the same in the remaining quarters but realized the momentum slowly shifted toward the away side.

Two teams exchanged field goals and a myriad of punts before the final 15 minutes. From then on, it was the JJ McCarthy show. He demonstrated why the Vikings drafted him in the top 10 by dropping three total touchdowns and a cool celebration to snatch the game from under the Bears’ noses.

The Chicago franchise went from leading by 10+ points to trailing by seven in the garbage time.

Williams salvaged one score back two minutes from time. It took him two attempts. Just before the two-minute warning, Williams scrambled 14 yards to score his second rushing TD, only to have it overturned as a small part of his right cleat went out of bounds.

The Bears set up the ball inside the 10-yard line, and Williams took full advantage. He found wide receiver Rome Odunze on a post route for a score.

During their possession, the Vikings burned down the clock to just nine seconds by punting the ball away for one final time.

Johnson rallied his team to move quickly to get them into the field goal range. However, a comedy of errors from Drew Dalman and DJ Moore nullified their first play. The officials penalized Moore for an illegal shift on the line of scrimmage, leaving them with 5 seconds to work with.

Instead of kicking the ball out of bounds to let the field goal team take over, the Bears chose to pass the ball around and turned it over to the Vikings. Naturally, the fans were angry about Johnson’s rookie mistake. They were booed off after the final whistle.

Ben Johnson reflects on the Vikings’ defeat

Obviously, the fourth-quarter drubbing was a big negative for the Bears, but they also conceded a staggering 12 penalties on the night. For a team that’s aiming for the playoffs, it cannot afford to have that many infringements.

Moreover, the defense has to be spotless until the clock hits zero. If a rookie quarterback can rally a comeback in the final quarter, then the truly elite shot-caller will have a field day.

Disappointing way to start the season… We said going into week one, the team that will make the least number of mistakes would win the game, and unfortunately, we made too many… myself included. The defense did a really good job up until the end. They kept us in that ball game.

Ben Johnson said in the post-game presser

Johnson praised Williams for his performance but urged the former first overall pick to improve on his week one outing.

Landon Oliver, who covers the Indianapolis Colts for The Blue Stable, summed up Caleb Williams’ fledgling career with an eye-opening tweet.

Watching Caleb Williams is like watching [Russell] Westbrook. He will do something so amazing that you’re in awe and then follow that up with 3-4 of the dumbest things you’ve ever seen.

Maybe fans overreacted a little bit because it’s only the opening weekend, and there are still 16 games left in the campaign for the Bears to put up a respectable record or even sneak into the playoffs via the wild card. However, they have a schedule full of tough opponents to deal with before planning for January.
