When the Chicago Bears brought in Thomas Brown from the Carolina Panthers in the offseason, the former NFL running back never thought that within eleven months, he would manage the entire team. Brown signed as the Bears’ passing game coordinator, but after Shane Waldron was fired, they upgraded his status to offensive coordinator.
He wasn’t the Bears OC for too long. Before even memorizing the play callings on the offensive side of things, Browns found himself as the Bears head coach after they fired Matt Eberflus due to a 4-8 start to the season.
From managing the passing system to heading the entire team, it was a jump that he perhaps hardly dreamt of. Being the head coach of an NFL team, especially a struggling side, isn’t an easy job. Brown found that out in a rather peculiar way.
Head coaches have to keep an eye on several different areas besides coaching the team, which can be challenging, more so for a newcomer. Brown revealed the added workload sometimes kept him from eating proper meals.

The 38-year-old former NFL running back weighed about 230 pounds the day he took over as the head coach. Reportedly, he now weighs just over 200 pounds.
Thomas Brown will face a familiar foe in his first game in charge of the Bears
The Bears are preparing to play against Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers on Monday. Brown experienced Shanahan’s footballing ideals for three years as the running back coach at Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams, where he won a Super Bowl.
McVay comes from the Shanahan Tree of football coaches, so even if indirectly, Brown gained knowledge of how Shanahan conducts his team through McVay’s coaching.
However, Brown highlighted that he is a defensive-minded offensive coach. He contemplated switching to a defensive position during his playing days, which would have prolonged his career beyond three NFL years.
That’s all in the past, but now he has to manage a Bears side desperate to end the season on a high note. Although both the Bears and 49ers suffered defeat in their previous game, the Chicago team will enter the Week 14 fixture as a 3.5-point underdog.
