Caleb Williams and Shane Waldron did not see eye to eye after allegedly having a fallout midway through the 2024 season. Williams saw no other option but to seek help outside the Chicago Bears facility and continue his progress.
Williams was Waldron’s personal favorite; before the 2024 NFL Draft, he and the Heisman Trophy winner spent a lot of time together. The Bears decided to take Williams first overall, ahead of LSU’s Jayden Daniels.
Waldron only lasted nine games (4-5). Three consecutive losses were enough for the Bears to decide they needed to fire their offensive coordinator.
New details recently surfaced, documenting the tension between Williams and Waldron. Dave of Sports Mockery mentioned finding clues in an episode of Making Monsters by 2nd City Gridiron. Tyron Doll, the host of the show, shed details from inside the Bears locker room.
The 23-year-old quarterback reportedly was so fed up with Waldron that he set up his own separate ‘Film Study Room’ to make up for the lack of coaching from Waldron.

They had reached a crossroads of no return. The Bears were 30th in the NFL in total offense and 24th in scoring. Losing to Daniels and the Washington Commanders was the turning point in the Bears season as they went three consecutive games without scoring a touchdown.
Despite the poor performances, Williams kept up his end of the bargain. He completed 74% of his passes, threw seven touchdown passes, and only one interception.
What happened to Shane Waldron after falling out with Caleb Williams
The Bears failed to improve even though Waldron was no longer in the building. They finished with just five wins, but the silver lining was their campaign was beating the Green Bay Packers.

General Manager Ryan Poles and the Bears’ owners jointly concluded that it was best to fire head coach Matt Eberflus. After interviewing several candidates, the Bears hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their head coach. Under Johnson’s stewardship, the Lions won consecutive NFC North titles, making him a hot prospect.
Johnson admired Williams as a quarterback even when he was in Detroit.
There’s no question this guy is talented… He’s got quite a fastball and has some creativity to him. Can extend plays and is accurate down the field as well.
Ben Johnson said
Ben Johnson couldn’t hold back his smile talking about Caleb Williams. 👀

So, if Johnson is now with the Bears, then what happened to Shane Waldron? He is now in Florida with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their offensive coordinator. Waldron joined new head coach Liam Coen’s staff. The pair’s biggest challenge will be to revive QB Trevor Lawrence’s career.
