The Dallas Cowboys’ season did not play out as expected, and Jerry Jones is left to rue some of the mistakes of not truly going all in. One of the byproducts of that embarrassing season was the discussion surrounding head coach Mike McCarthy and his future.

The discussion came about as the Super Bowl winning head coach is out of a contract after this season. In addition to that, his coaching abilities came into question when the team struggled to put together a meaningful season once Dak Prescott ended his year.

In the 2023-24 season he guided the Dallas Cowboys to have a stellar run. However, many consider other factors to have aided him. While some might want him out, some are still high on his abilities as a head coach. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was notified of one team who would be interested in those abilities.

Chicago Bears have sought permission to interview Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and are awaiting a response from Dallas, sources tell me and Todd Archer. If the Cowboys don’t allow permission this week, the Bears could interview McCarthy after his exclusive negotiating window with Dallas expires Jan. 14.

This means the Chicago Bears want to at least field an interview with McCarthy. As he is still under contract as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, GM Ryan Poles will need permission from Jerry Jones to interview McCarthy.

If Jones does not give permission, the Chicago Bears will have to wait at least until January 14th. That is when Mike McCarthy‘s exclusive negotiations window with the Cowboys expires. He can then explore multiple interviews across the league.

However, in the midst of all this are ardent Dallas Cowboys fans. They have seen how Mike McCarthy has been throughout his five seasons with their team. When news of this permission to interview broke, they wasted no time to go public with their opinions on him.

They replied on Schefter’s X post and made it clear that the Chicago Bears can interview him and take him away. They have seen enough and want him gone. Check out examples of such responses below.

Fans may have voiced their opinions clearly, but no one truly knows what Jerry Jones wants. He has publicly backed his head coach before. He even event to the extent of suggesting that he might extend McCarthy with a new contract.

Aside from Micah Parsons‘ comments, it is not clear how the locker room feels about their 61-year-old head coach. However, that decision is for the owner cum GM to make. If he feels McCarthy is the best bet for them to move forward, the Bears might not be able to interview him.
