With barely over 30 seconds left and one timeout in hand, Matt Eberflus chose to play hero ball. Instead of taking advantage of the clock, the Bears burned a few crucial seconds and made a complete mess of the final play.

Quarterback Caleb Williams made the Thanksgiving fixture between the Bears and the Detroit Lions interesting after he threw three touchdowns and also set the rookie record for not throwing an interception for most consecutive passes. However, he ran around like a headless chicken at the line of scrimmage to get the team lineup quickly.

The Bears erased the Lions’ lead in the second half. Williams threw 256 yards and fed veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen two touchdown passes. The Bears were close to taking the lead and could have if Matt Eberflus didn’t hesitate too much. Social media ensured to remind him that.

During the final play of the night, Eberflus did not use his final timeout to ease the pressure off Williams. The first-year starter tried his best to rally the team, but that ate away precious time. Additionally, he missed the crucial final pass to Odunze.

Eberflus explained his decision to not take the timeout near the end during the post-game presser.

We are at 36 seconds right there. Our hope was, cause it was third going into fourth, that we would re-rack that play at 18 seconds. Throw it in bounds, get it into field goal range, and get a timeout. That was our decision-making process. We were outside of field goal range, so we needed to get a few more yards in there, as close as we can get and then call a timeout. And that’s why we held that last timeout at the end of the game.

The Bears are now 4-8, bottom of the NFC North, with a six-game losing streak. Their remaining five games are all against NFC teams, including a rematch against the Lions, Vikings, and Packers. They will also play the 49ers and the Seahawks.
