Scott Coker reacts to Bellator 278! Bellator MMA just wrapped up their Hawaiian event Bellator 278 which took place on April 22 inside the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. The event was headlined by the women’s flyweight championship class between Liz Carmouche and Juliana Velasquez. After four rounds, Carmouche finally owns the belt via TKO stoppage. But the result was controversial and fight fans had mixed reactions to it.

In the fourth round, Liz Carmouche got into a top crucifix position and started dropping elbows but none of them looked serious. But referee, Mike Beltran had other ideas as he stopped the fight. Velaquez was furious by the decision and argued against it but the fight was decided.

After the stoppage made by referee Mike Beltran, the fight community on Twitter didn’t hold back in criticizing the decision. There were several tweets from fans and fighters who weren’t satisfied with the stoppage. On the other hand, some accepted the result. Liz agreed with the decision, and she said something horrible would’ve happened if the referee hadn’t intervened.

Bellator’s president, Scott Coker thoroughly enjoyed the event, and he is glad he wasn’t officiating the bout. After Bellator 279, he was asked to comment on the whole incident, he said, “I’m just glad I’m not a judge. I would never want to be a referee or judge. That’s something that, hey, those guys are professionals of what they do at the highest level. We travel with the A-crew. He saw it how he saw it, and that’s something that you should ask him next time you see him.”

Talking about the rematch between these two, Coker said, “For me, I don’t mind running that fight back. I think the ladies would definitely scrap again. To me, I don’t mind running that fight back. Believe me, I’m getting calls from the manager and this, but there’s really nothing we can do. The fight is over. It’s already done. Let’s move on. It’s something that we’ll have conversations with both of them when we get back. Then we’ll start building the future for both ladies.”
