Usman Nurmagomedov, the Bellator lightweight champion, recently found himself at the center of a controversy after word leaked of his ban due to a failed drug test. Taking to Instagram, the unbeaten fighter expressed his thoughts on the incident. He offered insight into the circumstances behind the presence of a forbidden drug in his system.
In reaction to the recent announcement of his suspension due to a failed drug test, Usman Nurmagomedov has provided a brief explanation of the facts surrounding the prohibited substance detected in his system. This is what he said:
The results of my test revealed a prohibited substance that entered my body through medications, prescribed to me by a doctor. A few months before my fight, I was undergoing treatment, but unfortunately I did not notify the athletic commission in advance. I would like to note that the California state athletic commission conducted its own full investigation, where I provided all the necessary documents, doctor notes and medical certificates, thanks to which the period of my disqualification was reduced to 6 months, instead of longer suspensions accepted in such cases.Usman Nurmagomedov via Instagram.
Despite this ban, Usman emphasized the thoroughness of the California State Athletic Commission’s investigation. Nurmagomedov emphasized the importance of his cooperation with the commission. This was instrumental in lowering his ban time to six months.
This statement by Nurmagomedov provides a complex viewpoint from the athlete’s standpoint. It admits the error and emphasizes the need for open communication between athletes and regulatory agencies.
Islam Makhachev, a teammate of Usman Nurmagomedov had also tested positive for illegal substance
Islam Makhachev, the UFC lightweight championship challenger, received a suspension in 2016 after testing positive for the banned drug meldonium. This illegal substance was discovered in his system after a drug test done before his scheduled fight at UFC on Fox 19. Meldonium was legal before January 2016. However, that year, it was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) prohibited list.
Despite a temporary punishment, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) subsequently exonerated Makhachev of any misconduct. USADA determined that the deficient concentration of meldonium in Makhachev’s urine sample, when paired with his account of usage, was consistent with consumption before the substance’s formal prohibition on January 1, 2016. Consequently, Makhachev’s positive test resulted in no time of ineligibility.
Islam Makhachev went on to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. He fought Charles Oliviera for the title and defeated him via submission. Since then, Makhachev has defended his title twice, both times against the formidable Alexander Volkanovski.
