Former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson sparked controversy among Lions fans with his remarks at the NFL Scouting Combine. In a recent media interview, Johnson subtly undermined Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff.

The new Chicago Bears head coach Johnson spoke to media regarding the last year’s first overall and the Bears’ starting quarterback Caleb Williams. While discussing Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, Johnson highlighted his athleticism, stating that he had never worked with a quarterback as dynamic as Williams.

The out of structure, the off schedule, the creation, that’s what stands out the most because that’s really the way that this league’s going right now it seems like… The pass rush is coming down and to have an athlete like Caleb extend the play and potentially find an explosive down the field. That’s what gets me going a little bit. I get excited thinking about that because I haven’t been around that since I’ve been in the league. I haven’t really been around that since I’ve been in the league.

Over the past three years, Ben Johnson played a pivotal role in Jared Goff’s transformation into one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. Once cast aside by Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams, Goff found new life in Detroit, where Johnson maximized his strengths. Under Johnson’s guidance, Goff led the Detroit Lions to the NFC Championship in 2023 and an impressive 15-2 record in 2024.

To some extent, Jared Goff isn’t the most athletic hunting down scoring chances. Caleb Williams brings a different playing style than Goff, who thrives as a traditional pocket passer. While Williams excels at extending plays outside the pocket, Goff is far more dependent on its stability, if it collapses, the play typically ends.

Ben Johnson wants the Chicago Bears to build from basics

the former OC and new head coach has big plans for his new team – the Chicago Bears. The pressure is heavily upped for Johnson as he will be facing his former team not just once but twice in the regular season. In order to pull them from the last-place finish in 2024, Johnson has a lot of ammunition in his arsenal.

However, the sharpest of them of all would be returning to basics. “We’re going to break it down to the studs and work to develop it from there,” he said.

Ben Johnson also admitted that the procedures will be the same for the sophomore quarterback. The Bears and Williams suffered greatly after losing the rookie faceoff against the Washington Commanders.

It’s as simple as the procedure of the huddle, breaking the huddle, using cadence, motions, shifts, all those things that can help attack a defense that we feel like can take another step here in Chicago. That will be the starting point. We will look to build around him as well with the talent level and the rest of the support staff.

The coaching changes are expected to produce some results in a gloomy NFL division scenario. The Bears will have to play the Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers.
