The 2023 NASCAR season marked the final Cup series race at Southern California, owing to the massive reconstruction project for the Auto Club Speedway. The Fontana track was shut down and demolished, with a major porting of land being sold for half a billion as well. But since the demolition, no positive move has been made.

NASCAR has been holding back from investing in the project because of the massive budget. Now with The Clash being moved from the LA Colosseum, there won’t be any race in the huge racing market from the 2024 season. This is something NASCAR has to take care of and now Executive Vice President and Chief Venue & Racing Innovations Officer Ben Kennedy has addressed the issue.

Southern California. We’ve had The Clash there for the past few years, we’ve had Fontana there for a number of years. We’re not going to have a Southern California race on the schedule in 2025.

Ben Kennedy said via Happy Hour podcast.

He admitted that Southern California is a massive opportunity, a great market for the sport and well as the partners they have. The senior NASCAR official announced that they need to find a way to keep racing there.

That’s a massive opportunity because it’s a massive market, massive market for our partners, massive market for a number of people, massive market for a number of fans. We need to find a way to have a presence in Southern California somehow.

Ben Kennedy added.

While further talking on the point, Kennedy pointed out that Pacific Northwest is another market they have been looking into and determined to get back. He also pointed out that Northeast is also another market that they are looking into expanding the sport.

We’ve talked about the Pacific Northwest a lot. We’ve had the Xfinity Series in Portland for the past two or three years. I think that’s another market we’d eventually like to be in. And then I would just say the Northeast in general…If you look at the amount of racing that we had four or five years ago in the Northeast relative to where we’re at today, we have a lot less inventory.

The comments from Ben Kennedy shows that the premier stock car racing is not ready to ignore the important market they are not racing at the moment. It will be interesting to see when all these plans will would come to fruition.
