Thiem announced his retirement earlier this year, citing his inability to recover from a wrist injury as the primary reason for his decision. He sustained the wrist injury during the grass-court season of 2021, just nine months after winning his lone Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Thiem has won 17 career titles. Besides his US Open victory, his other major title was the 2019 Indian Wells Masters, where he defeated Roger Federer in the final.
