England’s Test captain Ben Stokes has been challenged to accept that the team’s ‘Baz-Ball’ strategy is ‘dead’, by former skipper and legendary batter Michael Vaughan. Vaughan vented out his frustration on the Three Lions’ woeful display, in the ongoing 2025-26 Ashes.
It was a one-sided affair for the Australian red-ball side in the Ashes, until the fourth Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. The world No. 1-ranked Test side had already secured the series after going 3-0 up inside 11 days, having won the opening three matches in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. The home side retained the Urn for the fifth consecutive edition, after winning the third Test by 82 runs.
The visitors saved themselves from a humiliating whitewash defeat by winning in Melbourne. They edged ahead in a low-scoring thriller, chasing down a tricky 175-run target to win by four wickets. However, England’s famed ‘Baz-Ball’ style of playing red-ball cricket, which has been in practice under head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, has come under fire, given that the duo have failed to win a single Test series against Australia and India.
‘Baz-Ball’ might have yielded results against weaker sides, but it has certainly backfired in conditions away from England. Former Test captain Michael Vaughan added to his criticism, after having previously noted that ‘Baz-Ball’ has left the team badly exposed. In a recent interaction on Cricbuzz, he confidently stated that the strategy is ‘dead’, highlighting its volatility against better teams and on good surfaces.
Last week we were saying that Baz-Ball has died, it’s gone… I totally agree, Baz-Ball over a period of time against the better sides and one good wickets, it isn’t going to work.
The 51-year-old also urged the current England side to accept its failures, adding that the players and the team management should be mature enough to take note of the criticism. He opined that ‘Baz-Ball’ has not worked out primarily due to its adherence at junctures where traditional cricket should have been preferred over aggressiveness. He challenged Ben Stokes and his side to bat first in the fifth Test in Sydney, and turn around their fortunes.
On the aggressive approach, I want the team to be really matured and accept that some of the criticism is right… If they [England] are batting first in Sydney where the pitch is better, can they bat properly for 110 odd overs.

England will be hoping to end the 2025-26 Ashes on a high note in Sydney, after having secured their first win on Australian soil in over a decade in the previous encounter. The Three Lions will then travel to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series, starting January 22.
Ben Stokes vows to continue as England captain after Ashes loss
Despite having lost the 2025-26 Ashes Urn to Australia, England’s red-ball skipper Ben Stokes brushed aside claims that he might step down from his role. The Three Lions have now failed to win the Ashes in five editions since 2015, when they last won under Alastair Cook’s leadership.

Ben Stokes took over as England’s Test captain back in 2022, after a similarly disappointing result in the Ashes back then under Joe Root‘s captaincy. While the ongoing tour to Australia was touted to be a testament to Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum’s aggressive cricketing legacy, it has turned out otherwise. Fans have called for the duo to quit their positions at the end of the Ashes.
However, the 34-year-old English skipper reiterated his commitment towards the team’s success, and exclaimed that he hopes to continue as captain in the future. Asked if he still has the energy for the job, Stokes positively replied by stating that he is not done, with an eye on finishing the series 3-2. Before the Australia tour, Ben Stokes had agreed a new England central contract, which is set to run until 2027.
It moves over into what else we have in front of us. We still have two games left in the series and a hell of a lot to play for, as individuals and a team.
Stokes does boast a decent captaincy record in the longest format, having led the Three Lions to 23 wins, 16 losses and one draw in 41 matches. He has enjoyed a brilliant 56.09 win percentage, which puts him ahead of legendary captains like Michael Vaughan and Andrew Strauss.
