England’s struggle in the ongoing 2025-26 Ashes series against Australia, seems to have taken a toll on the players. While the home side batted aggressively early on the second day of the Adelaide Test, a frustrated English skipper Ben Stokes got into a heated exchange with pacer Jofra Archer.
The Australian side put up a dominant batting show in the first innings of the third Test in Adelaide against England. Despite being reduced to 94/4 on Day 1, the world no.1-ranked Test side produced a comeback, thanks to an impressive batting display by Alex Carey, Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Starc. While Carey scored a remarkable 106 runs off 143 balls, Khawaja hit 82 runs off 126 balls.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc, who had already scored a 77-run knock in the second Test in Brisbane, showed off his batting prowess by scoring another half-century in Adelaide. Starc smashed four boundaries in quick succession in the later stages of Australia’s first innings. For the Three Lions, Jofra Archer was the pick among the bowlers, as he finished with figures of 5/53, his first five-wicket haul since 2019.

The wild sight of two England stars at odds, moments after taking a wicket, stunned the #Ashes.
See what Ben Stokes appeared to tell Jofra Archer – and it's even more brutal than expected.

However, despite the individual figures, Archer and Brydon Carse leaked runs on Day 2, much to the despair of England captain Ben Stokes. After the 30-year-old was hit for a boundary in the 86th over, Stokes frustratingly walked up to him. The Three Lions skipper had a stern word with Archer over his lack of control and the ease with which Starc was scoring runs against him. Archer immediately responded by bowling out Starc off the very next ball.
Ben Stokes saying to Archer

Mate don't complain about the field placings when you bowl 💩

It seemingly appeared that Stokes’ warning to Archer had paid off, with lip-readers figuring out what the England captain spoke. The all-rounder informed Jofra Archer that he should not be complaining about field placements after bowling ‘s**t’, which was a response to the bowler’s demand for a fielder to be placed at third man. Ben Stokes then urged his teammate to bowl on the stumps, before also appearing to tell him ‘shut up’ as he tried to answer back.
Mate, don’t complain about the field placings when you bowl s**t… Bowl on the stumps and look what happens. Shut the f**k up.
Jofra Archer also starred with the bat during England’s innings, interestingly bringing up a 45-run stand with captain Ben Stokes. He scored a crucial 30 runs off 48 deliveries, and remained unbeaten at the end of the second day’s play, to take his team to a fighting total of 213/8.
