IPL 2021: Ben Stokes ruled out of tournament with suspected broken hand

In what could be a huge blow to the Rajasthan Royals (RR), all-rounder Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The blow comes after bowling ace Jofra Archer was also ruled out of the first few matches of the tournament due to an injury. With Stokes now out as well, RR would find themselves in a real spot of bother and it would only rub salt into the wounds of the heartbreaking loss in their opening match.

RR fell agonizingly short off a huge target of 222 set yesterday by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by four runs. Stokes got out for a duck in the chase and Jos Buttler could only hit 25 runs. However, skipper Sanju Samson came up with a knock for the ages to get a century. However, when 5 runs were required off the last ball bowled by Arshdeep Singh, the batter holed out to wide long-off.

The injury occurred while taking a catch

According to a report from The Independent, the injury occurred when Stokes dived in to take the catch of Chris Gayle. The big-hitting West Indian batsman was dismissed by part-timer Riyan Parag. Gayle hit a flat shot towards Stokes at long-on and while completing the catch, the English all-rounder landed awkwardly on his hand. He immediately grimaced in pain but carried on in the field.

The report read, “Stokes will remain out in India for a week. Dialogue has already begun between the ECB and Royals around managing the injury. He will have an X-Ray in India on Thursday to determine how much damage has been done before the ECB take over the planning of the recovery.

Meanwhile, with regard to Archer, Rajasthan Royals await on a verdict with regard to his availability.
