Harrison Butker is slowly becoming a public enemy no. 1 following his faith-based speech at the commencement of Benedictine College last week. Even the nuns of the Catholic institutions are unhappy with some of his statements regarding women.
Butker is a devout Catholic and a religious man. He was given the task of saying some words of encouragement. Instead, his views and ideas about women and gender roles in society created outrage.
Even the nuns of the establishment stepped in, expressing disappointment with Butker. The organization wrote a lengthy explanation on its Facebook page on Thursday.
The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica do not believe that Harrison Butker’s comments in his 2024 Benedectine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedectine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested.the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica stated
They further added that Butker’s statements ‘fostered division’ instead of uniting. However, the line that drew the most concern for the nuns was “being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman.“
It did not coincide with the philosophy of society.
We sisters have dedicated our lives to God and God’s people, including the many women whom we have taught and influenced during the past 160 years. These women have made a tremendous difference in the world in their roles as wives and mothers and through their God-given gifts in leadership, scholarship, and their careers.the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica added
The three-time Super Bowl winners’ statement about gender roles goes against what the organization has worked on for so many years.
The nuns rejected the narrow definition of Harrison Butker’s Catholicism
Butker stated that women have been lied to by society about preferring to climb the ladder in the corporate world instead of taking care of their families. Not only that, he also attacked the LGBTQ+ community for celebrating a month that refers to one of the seven deadly sins.
The nuns of the Benedictine College completely opposed the notion, adding that they don’t support Butker’s narrow Catholicism, which is non-inclusive.
We reject a narrow definition of what it means to be Catholic... We want to be known as an inclusive, welcoming community embracing Benedictine values that have endured for more than 1,500 years and have spread through every continent and nation.the Facebook post stated
Harrison Butker also slammed the US government, specifically the second-ever Roman Catholic President Joe Biden, for his un-Catholic-like actions. However, since then, his jersey sales have skyrocketed.
