Basketball and hip-hop have gone hand in hand in the public consciousness for more than three decades now. Legendary Los Angeles rapper Ice Cube set the trend by name-dropping Michael Jordan on his LA anthem It Was A Good Day in 1992. In today’s day and age, NBA player name-drops are more abundant than beer brands in the world. Which is why Benny the Butcher and Zion Williamson are now linked.
Benny the Butcher has been a stalwart on the underground hip-hop circuit for quite a while now. Based in Buffalo, New York, the Black Soprano Family label owner has been held in high regard since releasing Tana Talk 3 in 2018. He’s a rapper with a high level of activity and has released multiple projects yearly since 2017. He will soon drop his annual summertime mixtape and is hyping it up with his new single ‘Summer ’25‘.
Known for his witty wordplay and grimy street imagery, Benny has been one of the most consistent ‘coke rappers’ over the past decade. He used a Zion Williamson reference to build imagery around his past as a drug dealer on Montana Avenue in Buffalo in his latest single. The song starts off with these four bars:
It’s summer ’25 already, look how quick a year passed
The Thunder won a chip, the whole LA smell like teargas
Connect still tappin in, I told him I’m retired still
He said you gon’ regret it like Zion regret Moriah Mills

NBA fans react to Benny the Butcher’s Zion Williamson reference
Using Zion Williamson as a punching bag for perverted people definitely isn’t that common even on hip-hop songs. The Pelicans franchise player has often been used as a name-drop in positive hip-hop references in years before. But since his dealings with Moriah Mills became public knowledge during the 2023 NBA Finals, the frequency of these name-drops has dropped significantly.

As an enthusiastic sports fan and a lyricist with a lot of humor etched into his songs, Benny the Butcher definitely had NBA fans wheezing with his latest lyrics.

Details of the Zion Williamson-Moriah Mills situation
From 2021 to 2023, Zion Williamson and Mills were reportedly in a romantic relationship, although the Pelicans star spent a lot of money to facilitate it. The relationship gained significant attention in June 2023 when Mills made serious allegations after Williamson announced he and his girlfriend, Ahkeema, were expecting a child.
Mills claimed she had been with Williamson for three years, alleging he initially contacted her as a “fantasy girl” and offered her monthly payments of up to $107,000, gifts, and a non-disclosure agreement. She shared alleged Snapchat messages in which Williamson discussed moving her to New Orleans.
During this time, Mills posted tweets and TikTok videos accusing Williamson of infidelity and betrayal, claiming he requested threesomes, labeling him a “s*x addict,” and alleging he owed her $62,000 to keep their relationship private.
In July 2023, Mills posted a video accusing Williamson of physically abusing her since 2022, though she provided no evidence, and Williamson’s team did not publicly address these claims. Mills also stirred controversy by getting a tattoo of Williamson’s name on her face (later hinted to be fake) and releasing a song titled “YDC” about their relationship.
