“Best in the league”: Los Angeles Chargers make Derwin James the highest-paid safety in NFL history
Derwin James
Derwin James has secured the bag, the Safety for the Los Angeles Chargers who is respected and looked at as the heart and soul of that defense was fast approaching the end of his contract at the end of the 2022 season and was on track to become an unrestricted free agent but the LA Chargers finally gave in and not only paid James but made him the highest paid Safety in league history.
Derwin James has agreed to a four-year, $76.4 million contract extension on Wednesday as per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he will get $19.1 million per season which makes him the highest-paid safety in the league. His contract guarantees him $42 million, the 26-year-old Safety has been in talks with the Chargers for a while now, and on July 20th, the team publicly stated that they were “optimistic” about bringing him back and reaching an agreement that would ensure he stays in LA.

Derwin James held out from the Los Angeles Chargers training camp until he got paid:
When both sides were not able to reach an agreement, the Safety held out from the team’s training camp, he did not partake in any of the team drills as he wished to be paid at the earliest. This led to a lot of speculation that James was not happy with the team and could request to be traded. But the team knows his true value and what he brings to the table which is why they ensured that a deal was done at the earliest.
Drafted in the first round of 2018, Derwin James has been an integral member of the Chargers’ secondary lineup ever since. In his rookie season, he had 3.5 sacks, 3 INTs, 13 pass breaks, and 105 tackles. He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie and he went on to earn an All-Pro selection before finishing second in the Defensive ROTY voting.
He has missed a lot of games due to injury, in 2019, he played only 5 games before he had a stress fracture in his right foot that kept him out for the entire year, and in 2020, he had a meniscus injury in his right knee that led him to miss the whole season.
2021 was a better year as in 15 games, he had 2 sacks 2 INTs, 5 pass breaks, and 118 tackles. He made the Pro Bowl once again and almost won the Comeback Player of the Year award. With their safety happy and healthy, the Chargers will look to make a deep playoff run with their new roster.
