Bianca Andreescu will not travel to Rome for the Italian Open 2021, despite testing negative for covid-19. The Canadian had contacted the virus after arriving in Madrid, to compete at the Mutua Madrid Open 2021. However, after her positive covid test, she could not compete, and was placed under isolation.
She was expected to compete in Rome, and was also part of the draw ceremony. However, according to the rules of the Italian government, she is at the risk of undergoing another isolation period if she travels to the country.
“Although I have tested negative following my isolation period in Madrid and having been back in full training the last few days, the Italian Government rules put me at risk of being isolated again if I travel to Italy,” she wrote on Instagram.
Bianca Andreescu to make her comeback at French Open 2021
Bianca Andreescu reached the finals of the Miami Open 2021, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty. The US Open 2019 winner was out of action for almost 15 months, as she was recovering from injury. She was defeated in the second round of the Australian Open 2021, and has played just three tournaments so far.
The Canadian will now compete at the French Open 2021, which commences later this month. In 2019, she handed a walkover in the second round of Roland Garros to Sofia Kenin. She was seeded 22nd in Paris two years ago, and is expected to be ranked inside the top 10 this time around.
