Big Bash League: WATCH – Fan refuses to return ball after Dawid Malan’s six lands in his beer cup
Dawid Malan and fan with ball in his beer cup
The year 2020 saw the game of cricket being played in empty stands for the first time. As the pandemic slowly recedes, Cricket Australia and other governing bodies have started to allow fans back into the stadiums. And as the enthusiastic fans return, so does their humorous antics. During the ongoing 10th edition of the Big Bash League, one such incident has brought the league into the global spotlight.
The incident took place during a game between the Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes. During the 4th ball of the 16th over, Dawid Malan launched Lance Morris’ ball into the stands. And as a common practice, a fan lunged to take the catch in the stands only to drop it. After dropping the ball, the man somehow managed to deflect the ball inside beer which another man next to him was drinking. Overjoyed to find the match ball in his beer, the fan finished his drink and kept the ball as a souvenir.
Malan’s fiery knock takes the Hurricanes home
Malan, the current no.1 T20 batsman of the world, stood up to his reputation as he played a fiery knock to help the Hurricanes post a competitive total of 164. The Englishman top-scored with the bat as he smashed 75 off just 56 balls. None of the other batsmen chipped in barring Colin Ingram‘s quickfire 26 and Ben McDermott‘s resilient 31 off 35 balls. Billy Stanlake starred for the Stars with three wickets to his name.
Chasing a modest total, the Stars fell well short after a disastrous start. Glenn Maxwell‘s whirlwind 70 saw the Men in Green score only 143 as they lost by 21 runs. With the ball, Scot Boland‘s three wickets for 22 runs was the best figures for the Hurricanes and was adjudged the Man of the Match. Sandeep Lamichhane and Nathan Ellis took two wickets each to ably support Boland in dismantling the Stars.
