Bill Belichick was expected to be the front-runner for the head coaching job of NFL teams, but fate appears to have different plans for the eight-time Super Bowl winner. Recent rumors have suggested that Belichick is eyeing the HC job at the University of North Carolina.
The former NFL coach has been in touch with UNC about filling its vacant football coach position. The news has been confirmed by CBS Sports. At this stage, the University is sweetening the deal for Bill Belichick by extending an offer ‘so good’ he will be reluctant to deny it.
According to Ollie Connolly of The Guardian, UNC has included a guarantee that his son Stephen Belichick will be his successor once he decides to walk away from the role.
In addition to this, he will get the opportunity to bring Matt Patricia, and Ben McDaniels (brother of Josh McDaniels) and get the say in appointing a GM of his choice to take care of operations.
Bill Belichick has expressed genuine interest in the HC job at UNC and is not using it to leverage an NFL gig
Belichick has never coached a college football team; he began his career as an assistant coach with the Giants. In his eyes, it would be natural for him to consider this as a step-down. However, for a man who has achieved everything he could at the highest level, UNC’s offer presents a new challenge: to replicate the same success he had in the NFL in college football.
Bill Belichick is seriously considering this role, and despite HC vacancies in the NFL, he is not using this opportunity to force the hand of GMs in the league to approach him with a job offer. However, North Carolina has made it clear that it expects to hire a Head Coach by next week, right before the transfer portal opens.
Apart from Belichick, the other candidates who have been considered for this role are Jon Sumrall, Glenn Schumann, and Steve Wilks.
Per sources, I’m told Bill Belichick’s negotiations with North Carolina include a guarantee that Stephen Belichick will be named the school’s head coach in waiting. UNC is open to that guarantee. Discussions are not a bid to gain leverage for NFL offers and BB is open to the move

Irrespective of where Belichick lands, fans will see a new version of him as he is no longer adamant about micromanaging the entire team and performing the duties of the GM and the HC.
After over five decades of actively coaching in the NFL, Bill Belichick took a year off, and in the past few months, he has shown a side of him to the world that none knew existed.

From actively appearing on The Pat McAfee Show and creating his Instagram account, to opening a YouTube channel where he breaks down film, Bill Belichick has shown that his age is just a number. He still has the energy to actively handle multiple commitments, and that is an essential trait that the Head Coach of a football team will need to possess.
The odds of him accepting the UNC Tar Heels job are higher because it offers stability for himself and his son, who has proven himself after leading the Washington Huskies defense from the 50th ranked to the 28th this season, and finally, it offers him freedom and a chance to do something new.
