With the New York Giants on the hunt for a new head coach after firing Brian Daboll, one of the most obvious names to come to mind is Bill Belichick.
The current University of North Carolina Tar Heels head coach made his name with the Giants first under Ray Perkins, and then legendary head coach Bill Parcells. With the latter, Belichick won two Super Bowls and was responsible for running the defense with superstar pass rusher Lawrence Taylor on the squad.
It is due to that connection that his name appeared on the list of candidates for the Giants’ vacant head coach position. Many believed the 73-year-old might be jumping at the chance of coaching his former team.
Bill Belichick was not having the best of starts with UNC when rumors spread that he and the program were looking to buy out his contract. Eventually, they confirmed their commitment to each other and continued. Now, he has reiterated that obligation.
I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families. The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade. However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.
Bill Belichick’s statement read
This statement effectively ends any rumors that the long-time head coach would jump at the chance to coach an NFL team brimming with potential.
Bill Belichick’s time with UNC is steadily improving
Had UNC continued to struggle, Bill Belichick could have thought about the position open at the New York Giants. However, they seem to have turned their season around, which is why he reminded everyone of his commitment to the program.
Since arriving in Chapel Hill, my commitment to the UNC Football program has not waivered… My focus remains solely on continuing to improve this team, develop our players, and build a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud. We’re on to Wake Forest.
Bill Belichick mentioned in his statement
Belichick’s time with the Tar Heels hit rock bottom when he and his girlfriend made headlines after being caught on camera berating production staff. Allegations of improper recruiting were also being looked at. But what made it all worse was the embarrassing drubbing at the hands of the Clemson Tigers.
Since then, they seemed to have turned the tide. Close losses to California and Virginia were followed by two impressive wins against Syracuse and Stanford.
Now, his focus is on Wake Forest, as his team is starting to find its feet. These performances may have given him the confidence to do a good job in college football.
The Giants will have their work cut out to find their next head coach
Now that Bill Belichick has removed himself from the race to become the next head coach of the New York Giants, the franchise will have to look elsewhere.

They could go and hire Jon Gruden, who could be tempted with a major offer. However, the Mara family is not known to spend a gazillion dollars on superstar coaches.
Moreover, GM Joe Schoen wouldn’t want to bring in someone who could threaten his job. Those factors could see them going after coordinators, as they will come in with something to prove, while also willingly staying in check.
