If there were two words to describe Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson’s dramatised public life, it would be dumpster fire. The relationship, which apparently started on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021, has become the centre of NFL drama amid the release of the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach’s new book, The Art of Winning.

Bill Belichick had struggled to manage his public image following a series of increasingly awkward media moments. There’s an immediate need to fix the same before the dumpster fire becomes a nuclear meltdown, and the touch of a trained public relations expert is required.

Belichick had reportedly been in discussions with former Bears executive Brandon Faber about communication strategy. Sources confirmed that talks had been ongoing for months, although no formal agreement had been reached. “He needs someone who can offer unfiltered, direct advice,” one source familiar with the matter told Front Office Sports.

Although Julian Edelman and Dave Portnoy highlighted that Jordon Hudson is or acts like Bill Belichick’s PR personality, it is evident he needs further help to polish his failing brand image.

To begin with, the CBS Morning interview. During the sit-down, host Tony Dokoupil asked Belichick about how he met his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. Just as Belichick began to respond, Hudson, who was not part of the interview, interrupted off-camera from the producer’s table. Later reports noted that the interview was stopped for more than 30 minutes due to Hudson.

Despite decades of coaching success, his transition into author and media figure had not gone smoothly. His recent promotional efforts for a new book had been met with criticism and confusion. The situation raised broader concerns about his future off the field and his role at North Carolina.

In addition to the Hudson issue, there were several other glaring media issues. Belichick was accused of offering little transparency during the discussion, often giving curt answers or sitting silently when pressed.

There is an urgent need to practice some much-needed media training. It was not just the above two points, there were several observers who noticed the former Patriots head coach’s old, antagonistic media posture during his book tour. That approach, once effective in high-stakes football environments, had not translated to mainstream media promotion.

After all, he’s the brunt of several jokes on social media. Following the CBS incident, Belichick faced a wave of satire, including an SNL skit that mocked both his demeanor and relationship dynamic.

Bill Belichick’s PR disaster directly affects UNC as well.

Even from the start, the reviews about The Art of Winning had not been stellar. The book, although detailing several mistakes in his life, had no mention of the coach’s rift with Robert Kraft or the tensions between his star player, Tom Brady. It was called a decent insight at best.

However, the trainwreck of a promotional tour has worked in favor of the book. The memoir has reached number one in a certain category and ranked #6 in the Sports category behind five smut romances. He also kept UNC in headlines, but it raises the question whether the publicity is good for his overall image or for the brands he is a part of.

The UNC Tar Heels football programme has been one of the most talked-about football programs in the last few weeks. The newfound attention might lead to receiving better time slots and more money due to primetime streams. There are some who argue that the outside noise won’t matter when they start winning, but some wonder whether things have gone too far.

In a recent admission, The Raleigh News & Observer’s Luke DeCock noted UNC’s “brand is at stake here,” as more news of Jordon Hudson interjecting into Belichick’s life keeps breaking. POYTNER’s Tom Jones noted that the Tar Heels have been awarded a circus instead of a name-fame coach to jumpstart their football program.
