The Dallas Cowboys had a shot to land one of the greatest head coaches of all time, Bill Belichick before the team’s regular season ended. However, Jerry Jones fumbled this opportunity. As the team’s season began to go downhill, Belichick and his team kept a close eye on the possibility of a job opening up at the end of the year when Mike McCarthy’s contract was due to expire.

However, the Cowboys were not quick to react and take advantage of this opportunity. As per Jordan Schultz, Bill Belichick and Dallas would have had mutual interest if only he knew that there was going to be a vacancy for him to step into.

The eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach and his team remained optimistic about this possibility but what happened was Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ front office did not take any steps to hint to him that the job would be his for the taking.

Even during backchannel conversations, at no point was Belichick given a nudge by the Jones family, with whom he is very close. This partly played a role in his ultimate decision to shift to college football and take the role at the University of North Carolina.

Interestingly, after Belichick’s departure, the teams that once were reluctant to hire him are now actively seeking him. Dallas lost Mike McCarthy as the HC was not happy with the terms being offered by Jones in his contract extension. Belichick would have been a great fit in Dallas and his presence would turn this team into a true Super Bowl contender.

However, some things are just not meant to happen and unfortunately, for Cowboys fans, those things are getting to, and winning the Super Bowl. McCarthy’s departure is a silver lining for the team as they can land a great candidate such as Ben Johnson from Detroit to change the culture in Dallas. Ultimately, the call is in Jerry Jones’ hands and that is proving to be a big part of the problem.
