Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, Randy Moss, and Jordon Hudson were in attendance at Chapel Hill to witness the highly anticipated debut of Bill Belichick as the head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team. Belichick welcomed a TCU Horned Frogs team that was on a four-game unbeaten streak to snatch their fifth.
UNC came on strong from the kickoff, taking a 7-0 lead on their first drive that lasted seven plays and 83 yards. Belichick’s UNC looked disciplined until TCU tore the defense apart.
TCU scored 20 unanswered points in the first half, with the Tar Heels only managing 20 offensive yards in reply. Third-year South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez struggled to read the TCU blitz on multiple occasions, forcing Belichick to replace him with veteran Max Johnson for the final moments.
The final nail in the UNC coffin was punched in very early in the second half. Running back Kevorian Barnes broke a tackle to complete a 75-yard touchdown run, ending any hopes of a comeback.

Although Johnson found tight end Jake Johnson for a score late in the third quarter, the body language of the UNC players appeared very down. TCU quarterback Josh Hoover did not show any mercy. Hoover threw a dime to DJ Rogers in the fourth quarter to seal a 48-14 blowout victory to start the season for the 2023 CFP finalists.
Bill Belichick suffers embarrassment in his first UNC game
Those who have followed Belichick’s career in the NFL must know that he always fields a great defense. It wasn’t the case on Monday against TCU.

UNC allowed 41 consecutive points until Johnson’s TD. Furthermore, TCU outgained UNC 542-222 total yards, which included 258-50 yards on the ground.
Lopez only completed 4 passes, while Johnson completed 9 from 11 attempts for 103 yards. Wide receiver Jordan Shipp caught 4 passes for 84 yards.
As for TCU, Hoover racked up 27 completions from 36 for 284 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Barnes led the team in rushing yards with 113 and one score, and Jordan Dwyer caught 9 passes for 136 yards and scored one touchdown.
TCU delivered Bill Belichick the largest margin of defeat in his nearly 54 coaching career.

Belichick’s appointment brought massive expectations to North Carolina, but they weren’t viewed as world beaters. According to Sporting News, TCU carried a 60.9% winning chance over UNC before kickoff. So, it should not come as a surprise that the team, which went 4-4 in the ACC and 8-5 overall last year, lost its opening fixture. However, only a few could have guessed a blowout defeat.
Regardless, UNC has a chance to go 3-0 in the next three games against Charlotte, Richmond, and the UCF Knights before facing the number four-ranked Clemson and the California Golden Bears.
