The infamous departure from the New England Patriots hasn’t dismissed the negative attention surrounding Bill Belichick; in fact, it seems to be increasing. It recently happened after he revealed the bold nickname he has for Massachusetts, whom he blamed for having two previous losing seasons as head coach.
During his recent appearance on The Pat McAfee show, former NFL head coach and now-turned-analyst Belichick blamed Massachusetts’ ‘millionaire tax’ that restricted the Patriots from signing more free agents. While talking about the city, he addressed them as ‘Taxachusetts’ in reference to high state tax law.
That’s Taxachusetts, yeah. Virtually every player, even the practice squad, well the minimum players, are pretty close to a million dollars, so once you hit that million-dollar threshold then you pay more state tax in Massachusetts.Bill Belichick said
Belichick claimed that, while signing any possible free agents they were asked about the high state income tax and other states even offer ‘no state income tax’ law. The Patriots come at a disadvantage and lose those potential players.
In fact, Massachusetts implemented an additional 4% tax on the portion of the people’s individual tax income, surpassing the number of $1,000,000. By 2024, this threshold is expected to increase up to 1,053,750. State income tax majorly affects an athlete’s financial situation and that’s why Belichick firmly believes it affected their overall roster in the last two seasons– which eventually led to his departure.
Bill Belichick is settling well in his new role in broadcasting
Although the former legendary head coach failed to land a coaching job for the 2024 season, he seems to be exploring the arena of broadcasting with all his heart. He is set to replace his former quarterback Tom Brady from Let’s Go! Podcast, where he intends to do some damage control of his reputation.
He seems to be open to it. Now the guy who hates the media is getting in front of it. Around the league though, the conversations, 'cause there is definitely some chitty-chat about, ‘Look at Belichick playing the media darling role. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported
In addition to the podcast appearance, Belichick is also scheduled to be a part of Inside the NFL crew. He has also signed with ESPN’s Monday Night Football ManningCast, joined by the famous Manning brothers.
