Bill O’Brien had to be calmed down by the Boston College coaching staff after he lost his temper over an unsportsmanlike conduct call from the referee. That call played a significant part in the outcome.
Eleven seconds before the end of the third quarter, Boston College led Georgia Tech by eleven points. GT quarterback Haynes King connected with his receiver near the halfway line for a first down when a penalty flag was thrown by the sideline referee.
Cameras focused on O’Brien as he stepped onto the field to protest an illegal forward pass. The replay showed that 90% of King’s body was over the line of scrimmage, except his right leg. O’Brien vociferously complained to the official about his decision to award a first down to GT. His theatrics did not work. On the contrary, it backfired on him.
The referee gave Tech an advantage by penalizing O’Brien for unsportsmanlike conduct. It cost Boston College 15 extra yards.

Georgia Tech took advantage of the improved ball position and scored a touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter. The extended drive ended in a field goal, cutting the lead short to eight points.
A pair of rushing touchdowns from Jamal Haynes and Jordan Allen handed Tech its first lead since the first quarter. And even though BC reduced the gap to one point through Turbo Richard’s second touchdown of the game, GT kicker Aidan Birr’s third field goal conversion of the night secured a come-from-behind victory for the Yellow Jackets.
The game ended in a 36-34 win for Georgia Tech, cementing their place at the top of the ACC with a 9-1 record, ahead of Virginia on 9-2. Boston College, on the other hand, succumbed to a tenth loss of the year (1-10).
A disappointing year for Bill O’Brien and Boston College
Boston College has lost 10 games in a season only twice in the program’s history. Frank Spaziani was sacked by the Eagles management, the last time it happened in 2012.

O’Brien is under pressure, but he’s not the only reason for the rough season; he certainly wasn’t to blame on Saturday, as his team held the lead for most of the game. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty shook the Eagles, which they failed to recover from.
BC quarterback Dylan Lonergan capped off one of his better performances. Lonergan completed 26 of 40 passes for 362 yards and threw 2 touchdowns. Ricard posted 11 carries for 141 yards and 1 rushing touchdown, while wide receiver Lewis Bond caught 8 passes for 106 yards.
Despite the impressive performance, Tech proved why they are the best ACC team in 2025. Bill O’Brien told the reporters after the game while refusing to comment on the supposed illegal forward pass from King:
It’s a terrible feeling. It’s a terrible, very frustrating feeling. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling, you know, to not be able to send those guys out as winners in their last home game. It’s very frustrating.
College football pundits predicted BC would have a difficult year after losing its starting quarterback, Thomas Castellanos, to Florida State, and RB1 Kye Robichaux graduated. A win on opening day against FCS opponent Fordham did not spark any excitement and for very good reasons. They have been winless ever since.
BC closes the year with a game against 3-7 Syracuse in New York. After that, the Eagles may decide on Bill O’Brien’s future. As Boston College is a private institution, not much is known about O’Brien’s annual salary. According to College Sports Network, Jeff Hafley earned around $3.1 million, so O’Brien, who has vast experience coaching college and NFL teams, should be earning more.
