Billie Jean King Cup: India to start campaign against Latvia
Team India will take on Latvia in the the World Group playoff tie for the Billie Jean King Cup in Juramla, on Friday. India’s no. 1 ranked player, Ankita Raina will play first up against former French Open winner, Jelena Ostapenko.
As reported, India captain, Vishal Uppal said, “We are quite excited. We have got the draw we wanted with our No. 1 player going up first.”
He further added, “The fact that there will be no home support gives us a slightly better chance.”
India will go in as the underdogs into the tie
The Indian women’s team will go as a huge underdog as none of the singles players are in the Top 100.
“This is the first time we have reached this stage playoffs) and just the pressure that the home crowd can put on us is not going to be there. We will be a little more at ease, knowing that 5,000 or 7,000 people are not going to be screaming at us.”
The second match will be played between Karman Kaur Thandi and Anastasija Sevastova. This contest between India and Latvia will be played on indoor courts of Lielupe Tennis Centre.
