This offseason, the Buffalo Bills received immense limelight for their decision to trade star wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Although the franchise clarified that the decision was not made in haste, analysts and fans questioned this move believing it to be a result of Diggs’ poor relationship with quarterback Josh Allen

However, during a recent The Athletic NFL Show, Bills General Manager Brandon Beane opened up about the real reason why they traded Diggs. Surprisingly, it has very little to do with the star wideout’s reputation in the locker room

A player of his caliber, you weigh a lot of things in those situation--But ultimately, we just talked about the cap. I don't need to go through all the reasons why we decided to go ahead and do that. I would say, from a cap standpoint, we decided just to go ahead and eat it now.
Brandon Beane said

Given, that Diggs’ previous contract with the Bills covered the 2028 season which is indeed a long-term decision for the franchise especially since they observed a decline in his production and the fact that he is turning 31 in the coming November.

If we tried to come up with some way to split it up too many different ways, then now it’s just like that albatross hanging on your neck all year. You look at your cap and you’re going, Look how much money we still have dead.

Stefon Diggs teams up with a high-powered Texans offense

Fortunately for the four-time Pro Bowler, his deal following the trade to Texans has been revised including a guaranteed $22.53 million in 2024. Additionally, he has joined the team who are being counted among legitimate Super Bowl contenders led by QB CJ Stroud

Diggs is joining the squad of Tank Dell, Nico Collins, and Dalton Schultz– making the Texans a real threat to the AFC teams. The wideout’s addition is greatly praised by Houston fans, given he is coming off six consecutive seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards.

Even though Diggs’ production did recede in recent years, Houston is confident in having him as an offensive weapon. With four primetime games in the upcoming season, they are prepared to dominate the league.
