Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills headed into their midweek matchup with the Houston Texans as clear favorites, aiming for their eighth win of the season and a shot at the AFC’s top seed. Still, any Bills fan will admit the Texans are one team they’d rather not face if they could help it.
As memory serves, Allen had never won at the Texans’ NRG Stadium in three previous trips. His only win was in Buffalo.
So, history was on the Texans’ side even though the Bills started as the overwhelming favorites. For a brief period, it appeared that Allen had managed to erase the jinx when he set up James Cook for a 45-yard score on the ground. In reality, it was still there as evidenced by veteran Matt Prater‘s missed extra point on the drive.
The AFC South team crawled back in with back-to-back field goals before Davis Mills, playing in his third straight game due to CJ Stroud‘s injury, threw an accurate pass to wide receiver Christian Kirk for a touchdown.
Two minutes later, the Bills struck back through backup rusher Ray Davis on a kick return. Davis received the kick and, even after colliding with his teammate, the Kentucky graduate beat the kicker and scored a 97-yard touchdown (one of the longest in the franchise’s history).

This was a welcoming development for the AFC East franchise that averaged 27.3 yards per return in the previous 10 games. More importantly, it was the Bills’ first kick return touchdown of the season (the Bengals, Patriots, and Jets are the other three teams with kick return TDs in 2025).
Jubilant scenes were caught in the Bills’ dugout after Davis scored the TD. The Bills players celebrated the moment by lifting special teams coach Chris Tabor in the air.

Ray Davis’ touchdown failed to help the Bills register a win against the Texans
At that time, Davis’s TD appeared to be that missing spark for the Bills to go on and win the game. The celebrations lasted for barely one minute before the Texans hit back with a touchdown drive.

Mills led a 6-play, 75-yard drive before connecting with rookie WR Jayden Higgins inside the Bills’ endzone. The funny part in all of this was that Josh Allen didn’t get a touch on the ball for nearly three minutes. From Davis’s kick-off return TD to Higgins’ third TD score of the year, Allen sat on the bench, powerless to stop the Texans from scoring.
The reigning NFL MVP hung his head in disappointment. He was battered and bruised behind the fifth-best offensive line in the league. To be fair, they were up against the best defense in the league, allowing just 18 TDs all year and conceding 16.3 points per game (before playing the Bills).
Prior to playing the Bills, the Texans’ pass rush averaged 3.0 sacks per game. On Thursday, the combination of Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and Derek Barnett recorded a total of 8 sacks on Allen. They also forced three turnovers, two interceptions, and one fumble.
Allen finished with 24 completions from 34 pass attempts for 253 yards, zero touchdowns, and 2 picks. Cook logged another 100 rushing-yard game and 1 score, while Khalil Shakir led the receivers with 8 receptions for 110 yards.
The Bills lost 19-23 and fell to a 7-4 record while the Texans improved to 6-5. Next week, the Bills take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Texans face the AFC South leaders, the Indianapolis Colts.
