On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills announced the completion of a trade for wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. As part of the deal, the Bills acquired Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round draft pick, while sending a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick to Cleveland in return.
The move attempted to address the gap left by Stefon Diggs, who was traded to the Houston Texans in the offseason. Amari Cooper’s introduction will offer quarterback Josh Allen a clear top target. Buffalo had been using a ‘receiver by committee’ strategy through the first six weeks.
Speaking on a video broadcast via the Bills, McDermott expressed his concerns and ensured confidence in the new signing. He also made a point to acknowledge that he has full confidence in the current depth as well. McDermott admitted eagerness to get Cooper in fast.
Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady also praised the newest addition in a video interview posted on Bills YT. He called Cooper a “smart player” and “a student of the game.” In 2023, Cooper ranked 3rd among all wide receivers with 17.4 yards per reception and 12th with 47 receptions of 10+ yards.
30-year-old Floridan Cooper has previously played with three different NFL teams. The Oakland Raiders (now based in Las Vegas) drafted Cooper fourth overall in 2015. He represented the Raider Nation till 2018 after which he transferred to Dallas Cowboys before gearing up for the Browns. In his ten years, Cooper has made the Pro Bowl five times.
Sean McDermott admits being appealed by Amari Cooper’s ‘ability to get separation’
Sean McDermott mentioned that he spent Tuesday morning reviewing the film of Amari Cooper before the trade. He emphasized that Cooper’s consistent ability to get open and excel against man coverage was a key attribute the Bills were looking for.
Cooper approaches the run game like a pro poker player, moving without any tell. He has made intended moves and steps crucial for games. In the broadcast, McDermott praised Cooper’s ability to separate from defenders with quick movements.
The AFC East saw some major action on Tuesday, with the Jets reuniting Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers and the Bills outdoing them. Buffalo have a clear lead over the Jets who are third after a controversial divisional loss to the Bills on Monday. In the coming weeks, the Bills are playing top teams including Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks.
