The Buffalo Bills have opted to part ways with Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller after three seasons. The decision was taken as part of the Bills’ cost-cutting moves to free up cap space. By cutting Miller, they will be able to free up $8.4 million in salary cap space. The team needs to free up space as they are $10.4 million in the red in terms of salary cap.
The NFL’s new year begins on Wednesday and retaining Von Miller would have proved to be costly for the Bills. Despite cutting him, a portion of his contract will remain on the team’s books and will count towards $15 million against their cap. Miller had signed a six-year deal with Buffalo worth $120 million. Buffalo is looking to re-sign running back James Cook for which they will need to free up some cap space.
His departure comes three years into the deal. Despite being cut, there is a possibility of the Bills bringing him back on a reduced contract. The two-time Super Bowl champion has played 14 years in the league and Father Time has begun to impact his game.
His production has declined in recent years. Last season he had 0 sacks through 12 games, a career first for him. This year, he ended with 17 total tackles and 6 sacks.
Fans are urging Von Miller to consider retiring
Does this mean that this is the end of the road for him? This is likely the case. Von Miller is now a veteran in the locker room and is more effective as a leader and in guiding his teammates rather than the star presence he is accustomed to being on the field. Miller is the NFL‘s active leader in sacks and will turn 36 shortly.

For a linebacker, that is considered the age to retire. For now, the Bills have not hinted at wanting to bring Miller back on but some teams will be interested in having him on their roster. There is a chance the Eagles or the Chiefs may bring Miller on board. Fans on X believe that Miller’s best days are behind him and it is time for him to consider retirement.

Makes sense. I can see him being brought back on a lighter contract/cap hit.

Tough move, but understandable given the cap situation.

It’s a business decision for future flexibility.
7 sacks last year, but only on 25% of snaps. He can be a role player for someone.

Probably back to Denver on a cheap deal to finish his career.

If he chooses to retire, the linebacker is bound to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. It has been an illustrious career, and his legacy will be hard to forget. The best-case scenario would be for him to return to Denver and play for one more season before retiring while playing for the team where he earned his name and established his dominance.
